The United Nations issues a progress report on the implementation of the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS.
 


March 20 marks the first annual National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

NMAC continues its support of the Gulf Coast Region with frequent visits to the area, helping leaders from impacted organizations meet with potential funders.

The first annual Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day takes place on June 8.
 
HPLS takes place in Dallas, TX. The opening plenary on June 5, honors the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first cases of AIDS, which were described in an article that appeared
in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
 
USCA celebrates its tenth anniversary at the 2006 meeting, in Hollywood, FL. Magic Johnson addressed attendees during a special pre-meeting "kick off" event and Drs. Luc Montagnier and Robert Gallo, the co-discoverers of HIV discussed the state of AIDS research today. The media coverage of USCA that year is unprecedented.
 
The United Nations convenes a follow-up meeting and issues a progress report on the implementation of the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS. The 16th International AIDS Conference convenes in Toronto, Canada. (View extensive online coverage provided by the Kaiser Familiy Foundation.) The first Eastern European and Central Asian AIDS Conference (EECAAC) is held in Moscow. AIDS researchers reveal on November 9 that HIV-1 and HIV-2 have been found in gorillas.
 
Congress reauthorizes the Ryan White CARE Act once again, with the Minority AIDS Initiative codified in law for the first time, due to the advocacy efforts of NMAC's Government Relations and Public Policy Division.
 
In November, NMAC releases the report, African Americans, Health Disparities and HIV/AIDS: Recommendations for Confronting the Epidemic in Black America. Authored by Dr. Robert Fulillove of Columbia University, the report brings NMAC a great deal of media coverage. The report is used as a vehicle to discuss controversy around providing condoms in Pennsylvania prisons. Richard Liu, a member of NMAC's Board, is interviewed by a Philadelphia television station.
