Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention Releases New Funding Opportunity Announcement
The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released funding opportunity
announcement (FOA): CDC-RFA-PS09-906: "Capacity Building Assistance (CBA) to
Improve the Delivery and Effectiveness of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
Prevention Services for High-Risk and/or Racial/Ethnic Minority Populations." A
strongly recommended Letter of Intent is due 5:00 pm EST, March 25, 2009. The
submission deadline for the required application is due 5:00 pm EST, May 11,
2009.
The purpose of this new program is to build the capacity of
organizations to operate optimally and to provide evidence-based interventions
and public health strategies that can help reduce the burden of HIV infection
among high-risk and/or racial/ethnic minority populations within the U.S. and
its Territories. This will be accomplished via a competitive process to award
cooperative agreements to non-governmental organizations to provide CBA to: (1)
community-based organizations (CBOs), including faith-based organizations
(FBOs); (2) community stakeholders providing HIV prevention services targeting
high-risk and/or racial/ethnic minority populations, and (3) health departments
and community planning groups.
Approximately 28 total awards are
available in the following five categories:
Category A: CBA for
CBOs
Strengthening organizational infrastructure, interventions, strategies,
monitoring and evaluation for HIV prevention.
Category B: CBA for
Communities
Strengthening community access to and utilization of HIV
prevention services.
Category C: CBA for Health Departments
Strengthening organizational infrastructure, interventions, strategies,
community planning, monitoring and evaluation for HIV prevention.
Category D: Resource Center for CBA Providers
Strengthening the
quality and delivery of CBA services for HIV Prevention.
Category E:
Resource Center for CBA Consumers
Strengthening consumer access to and
utilization of CBA services for HIV Prevention.
Eligible applicants are
limited to nonprofit organizations with 501(c)3 IRS status; for-profit
organizations; hospitals; universities; colleges; CBOs; FBOs; and
federally-recognized American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian tribally
designated organizations.
A strongly recommended Letter of Intent is due
5:00 pm EST, March 25, 2009. The submission deadline for the required
application is due 5:00 pm EST, May 11, 2009.

Community Setting: A Live Satellite Videoconference & Webcast
Series

The Management of HIV/ AIDS in the Correctional & Community
Setting is an on-going satellite videoconference, and webcast series designed to
address clinical issues in the management of HIV-infected patients. The programs
are funded through a unique, collaborative venture among Albany Medical College, the New York State Department of
Correctional Services, and private pharmaceutical companies.
CMEs and CNEs are available. There

Accreditation:
Albany Medical College is accredited by the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical
education for physicians. The Albany Medical College designates this educational
activity for a maximum of 1.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should
only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the
activity.
Nursing Accreditation:
The Albany Medical Center Hospital
is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on
Accreditation. This learning activity
will be awarded a maximum of 1.75 nursing contact hours.

New SOAR Training-of-Trainers Sessions
Announced
NMAC's SOAR Training-of-Trainers Series (TOTs) to train and
certify professional trainers for NMAC's Division of Technical Assistance,
Training and Treatment. The next TOTs under the SOAR Training Initiative are
planned for Miami, FL, April 28-30 and Seattle,
WA, May 6-8. For more

SSA to Distribute Economic Recovery One-Time Payments Information to
SSI and Social Security Beneficiaries
President Obama
recently signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This act
provides for the one-time payment of $250 to individuals who get Supplemental
Security Income (SSI) or Social Security benefits.
The Social
Security Administration (SSA) currently is working out how these payments will
be distributed. Informational brochures, mailers and online information will be
coming out soon. Please keep checking the SSA's special one-time payment
website: http://www.ssa.gov/payment/.
A
great deal of information already is available on this site's Frequently-Asked-Questions (FAQ)
page.
We expect everyone who is entitled to a payment to receive it by
late May 2009. No action will be required on the part of SSI and Social
Security beneficiaries.

Campaigns and Invites Everyone to Join Its Facebook

Hope's Voice
International is excited to announce the premiere of the "Does HIV Look
Like Me?" campaigns for South
Africa, Swaziland and the United States.
The campaigns
worked with ambassadors - young people living with HIV or AIDS - in each
country, and included leadership workshops, filming of the ambassadors’ stories,
a full print campaign, registration into the social networking website and an
in-country website in the native language.
