NMAC Lifeline - Tuesday, May 12,
2009
| May's Observance
Days around the Corner
Despite much research, there still is
not a vaccine for HIV/AIDS. HIV Vaccine
Awareness Day, lead annually on May 18 by the National Institutes of Allergies and
Infectious Diseases, is an opportunity to educate all Americans,
especially people of color and men who have sex with men, about the need for HIV vaccine
research. For more information, visit BeTheGeneration.org. Also, learn more about NMAC's
participation in the NIAID HIV
Vaccine Research Education
Initiative.

May
19 is National Asian
and Pacific Islander (API) HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The Banyan Tree Project, a national campaign to fight HIV/AIDS
stigma and discrimination in API communities, is the lead on this observance
day. Additional information is available here.
Other
awareness days to keep in mind:
The International
AIDS Candlelight Memorial, held annually on May 18, is a
program of the Global Health Council, one of the oldest and largest
grassroots mobilization campaigns for HIV/AIDS awareness in the world.
World Hepatitis
Awareness Day, coordinated by the World Hepatitis
Alliance and held annually on May 19, wants you to ask yourself: "Am I Number
12?" The day is meant to prompt people to think about the huge scale of
hepatitis infection globally.
Save-the-Date for the Next NMAC
Stakeholder Call
As announced last week, NMAC will hold
its second Stakeholder Call on Friday, May
22 at 1:00 p.m. EST, with guest speaker
Dr. Kevin Fenton, Director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral
Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) of the Director of the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He will be discussing the CDC's new
HIV/AIDS awareness campaign, Act Against
AIDS. To participate, call (605)
475-6333 and type in access code: 481162. Due to the large
number of participants expected, the call will not be an open forum. You may
submit your questions for Dr. Fenton in advance, however, via communications@nmac.org until Thursday,
May 21, 5:00 p.m.
EST.
