Linking Communities to Care through HIV and PrEP Navigation

nmacLINCsm-1NMAC’s HIV and PrEP Navigation program is called Linking Communities to Care through HIV and PrEP Navigation. The goal of Linking Communities to Care through HIV and PrEP Navigation is to improve recruitment, linkage, and retention to care and health outcomes for people of color living with HIV or at high-risk for HIV. The program is based on the concept that persons in communities trained as HIV and PrEP navigators can be effective in reducing and eliminating barriers to the timely prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV in their own communities. The Linking Communities to Care through HIV and PrEP Navigation program is funded by the National Library of Medicine and Gilead Pharmaceuticals.

The services provided through this program will improve the capacity of community-based and healthcare organizations to provide HIV and PrEP navigation services to persons of color living with HIV or at high-risk for HIV. Services will be delivered through trainings, technical assistance, and information sharing.

The goals of the program are as follows:

  1. To improve recruitment, linkage, and retention to care and health outcomes for people of color living with HIV or at high-risk for HIV;
  2. To train HIV and PrEP navigators to play a greater role in reducing and eliminating barriers to the timely prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV in their own communities.

NMAC offers individualized skills building and empowerment training for HIV navigators and organizational support for infrastructure and program development.

Online Course “Linking Communities to Care Through HIV Navigation Services” Now Available

This self-paced online training course, developed by NMAC with input from AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), provides information on important components of health literacy, motivational communication strategies, and navigation service models to support HIV navigators to effectively provide services to clients. This course was developed for community-based organizations that work within the HIV care continuum, inclusive of HIV navigators, peer educators, and outreach workers.

To access this course, set up an account. When a user clicks this link, they will be prompted to log in to the NLM Learning Center, where the course is housed. Upon logging in to their existing account, or registering for a new (free) account, the course description page will load, where the user can click the Enroll button.

National HIV and PrEP Navigation Landscape Assessment Report

The purpose of the National HIV and PrEP Navigation Landscape Assessment is to provide a  current understanding of how navigators are providing—or can provide—vital services to consumers at each stage of the HIV care continuum. This report provides input from people living with HIV, administrators of PrEPand HIV direct service programs, consumers, and PrEP and HIV navigators across the United States.

Motivational Interviewing and HIV: A Guide for Navigators

This guide assists navigators working with people diagnosed with or at risk for HIV. Navigators can play a crucial role in helping people living with HIV (PLWH) because nowhere is the need to change behaviors more important than in HIV infection. Changing risky behaviors can prevent transmission of the virus, and people living with HIV have better outcomes when they are able to change from risky to healthier
behaviors.
