Statement on the Passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee

It is with profound sadness that we at NMAC (formerly the National Minority AIDS Council) mourn the passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a steadfast champion for HIV/AIDS awareness, racial justice, and health equity. Her dedication to these causes was unwavering, and her loss leaves a significant void in the ongoing fight for justice and equality.

Congresswoman Jackson Lee’s commitment to the HIV/AIDS community was evident throughout her distinguished career. As the recipient of NMAC’s 2022 John Lewis Good Trouble Award, she was recognized for her tireless efforts to confront the challenges faced by marginalized communities. Her advocacy played a pivotal role in shaping policies that aimed to reduce health disparities and ensure that those affected by HIV/AIDS received the care and support they needed.

Beyond her work on HIV/AIDS, Congresswoman Jackson Lee was a vocal proponent of racial justice.
